Adults and young people
BJJ / Submission wrestling
Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and self-defence system developed by Carlos and Hélio Gracie from traditional Japanese jujutsu and judo techniques.
BJJ focuses especially on ground fighting. A typical match involves taking the opponent down and finishing with a joint lock or choke.
Submission wrestling (No-Gi) resembles Brazilian jiu-jitsu, but training takes place without a jiu-jitsu uniform, or gi.
Children and families
Junior BJJ and family jujutsu
BJJ Kouvola has two age groups for children and young people. Ages 7-11 learn BJJ fundamentals through play, games and sport-specific training.
Training for ages 12-15 consists of a guided warm-up, technique and sparring. Kim Lipsanen leads Junior BJJ with several experienced adults assisting.
There is no separate beginner course for juniors, so they can join at any time. An accompanying adult should attend the first sessions.
Family jujutsu
The group for ages 3-6 builds readiness for jujutsu through physical exercises. Children train in pairs with an adult under the instructor’s guidance. The group is led by Jani Karhunen.
